Education

Post Graduate Study in Instructional Technology, Towson University (30 hrs), leading to a Maryland State Department of Education Advanced Professional Certification as an Educational Media Generalist Master of Arts Degree in Education, American University, Washington, D.C. Bachelor of Arts Degree in English with a minor in Secondary education, University of Maryland Baltimore County

Experience

My most recent work experience was serving as a School Library Director for 5 years in a Maryland Private School for students in grades 6-12. I was the administrator of the library and taught library, research, and study skills. I was an Elementary School Librarian for 2 years for Anne Arundel County Public Schools, where I taught reading, research and computer skills. My teaching career began as a Middle School Language Arts teacher for Anne Arundel County Public Schools, where I taught for 7 years, before taking a sabbatical leave to obtain my certification as an Educational Media Generalist. Students with dyslexia benefit from a proven research based model, such as Orton Gillingham, in which I am also trained. I took this course because I wanted to utilize this methodology when I homeschooled my youngest daughter, who has a learning disability. I am also trained in the Lindamood-Bell Visualizing and Verbalizing Reading Comprehension methodology. The Lindamood-Bell instruction has proven successful for individuals with learning challenges, including dyslexia, ADHD, and autism.

Hobbies

My priority is spending time with my husband and four daughters. Relaxing with a good book is my favorite hobby. I also enjoy outdoor activities such as biking, kayaking, hiking and swimming. As an elementary school student, my teachers assigned me other students to tutor, including ESL students, so I feel that teaching was my destiny. I thoroughly enjoy working with students, particularly in a one on one setting. It was very rewarding to help individual students who came to the library during study hall seeking 1:1 help, or assistance with writing and/or editing college essays. Assisting with the research process, including selecting appropriate sources, writing research papers, and citing sources are just a few of my strengths as an educator. I believe that study and organizational skills are essential to student success, and can assist your son or daughter with these skills. Also, at your request, I can contact and work with your child's teacher to identify specific areas of need, and set goals to improve these weaknesses. Using hands on, multisensory approaches, I make learning fun.
